Cobra Commander (G.I.JOE) - 2007
Artwork by James Beaver

The 25th Anniversary of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero seemed like the right time to start drawing those characters again. I drew the cloth mask version for Cobra Commander last time so this pic has the battle helmet. Plus I just like any excuse to color something shiny. That pays off here since I intentionally gave him a pose where his hands would be reflected in his helmet. To keep him from looking so flat (a problem with a lot of my later stuff), I tried to add a subtle perspective warp that you see in the classic Transformers cartoon. There's something about Cobra Commander that even when he's standing next to guys who dwarf him (Destro), he's still larger than life to his soldiers. See, that's the goofy kind of thoughts I have when I'm dealing with skull-crushing sinus headaches and trying to keep snot-water from dripping on my artwork. I still like how this turned out. Big up to Dynamowolf, Psicoso, and Z_Sabre_User for helpful comments that lead to various tweaks in this pic.

The 'explosion back' version was done in 2008.
