Optimus Prime (Transformers) - 2014
Artwork by James Beaver

The pose was a lost sketch I'd found it while looking though loose sketches to make convention pics from. Rushing the pic for the convention led to a lot of mistakes, so it was a sloppy mess that I fixed (kinda) digitally. Unfortunately, the pose is something that would make him look ridiculously small on the full pic's ratio, so I went with a different size, asked a few people and they were okay with it.

The background: I'd drawn and colored a rushed attempt at the kind of rocky background you'd see a lot in the early episodes of the G1 cartoon. There'd be lasers shooting at him and he'd be shooting back. It looked okay until I was putting the composite version together and... blargh. I scrapped it at 2:15 in the morning and started working on the background in the final pic. I wanted to do a tribute to the G1 box designs, but AJ Sabino did that already (and awesomely). Then I remembered the G1 season one opening with Autobots standing on a giant Autobot symbol with the 3-D grids in the back, so I merged that idea with the colors of the box. The pic was finished in time to get the prints made the next day.
Alternate Versions:
Unfinished, abandoned original background idea The Autobot symbol pixel art trace was used to make a big symmetrical vector SVG file in Inkscape that could be used in Blender
