When Hanna-Barbera decided to expand the group of superheroes that'd appear on the Superfriends cartoon, they added some newly-developed non-comic book characters to keep the league from being completely white. Along with Apache Chief and Samurai, Black Vulcan here came in to mix things up a bit. I think the main ingredient to his coolness was that he was voiced by the great Buster Jones who also did the voice of Blaster in Transformers, Doc in G.I.JOE and Winston Zeddamore in the later episodes of the Real Ghostbusters cartoon.
I always liked his design except for the look of the shorts he wore. Sometimes, they'd draw him with completele pants which looked A LOT better. That's also one of the reasons that I drew him in his 'bolting' form. Besides, it's more exciting anyway. I got kinda artsy-fartsy with the lightning and how the black part of the costume merges with the lightning trail. Plus, there's definite 'Flash' influence with how the bolt headgear turns into lightning and connects with the rest. Other than that, I didn't really change the design from the cartoon version. One of those characters that I've always wanted to do a nice picture of.
