Making the Ice Cream Man gave me a chance to draw a character who could do all kinds of goofy stuff. This sketchbook page from 1995, the year of his creation, is probably the best example of that. Besides the overall oldness of the page, the pencils are worn out because it was popular page for people who browsed the sketchbook. If there was a top ten list of my "I need to find that and scan it so you can see it" pages that I've mentioned to people, this would be in the top 5. A lot of things that you'll see in his stories and artwork come from this. Everything from the Eddie Murphy line of "The Ice Cream Man is comin'!" to his curly, grinchy smile are seen here. |
